"I don't know about being the best. I still can't read music. But, having never heard anyone play in a similar way, I'd certainly consider, perhaps, being the most original."

Another winter poem featuring clementines, this one about Brian Eno and spending time with my son when he was little. Thanks to The New Quarterly where it first appeared.

The low December sun lights the haze a soft yellow, obscuring the distant landscape and bringing the nearby houses and skeletal trees into sharp focus. The wind blows in from the mountains shimmering the sunlit grass silver; Y Ddraig Goch flies straight out, its tail points towards the sea.

The colourless sunset has left a midnight blue afterglow on the horizon where it meets the hills. Below it the lights in the windows twinkle in the blackness.

The wind gusts occasionally against the rain flecked window of my living room.

I hate Sundays but I appreciate its stillness this evening!

The snow has gone now from the hills around St Dogs. Under a clear November sky the distant fields look damp and heavy. There's little wind today, Y Ddraig Goch barely flutters. The trees around the verdigris bell tower are bare now, except for an avenue of evergreens nearby.

Late afternoon. A lead grey sky sits heavily above the snow covered hills. The room is cold. I go and make a cup of coffee. When I return to the living room, night has already fallen. The hills are invisible now; just the lights in distant windows, shining in the blackness like stars.

Yesterday's cloudless crystal blue skies are replaced with the more familiar grey. Outside, the streets are wet and the passing dogwalkers have their hoods up. Inside, the room is dark and grey but I don't want to turn the light on at 9 am, there is something depressingly dreary about that.

Day 33: Cerys Hafana - Cilgerran (2022; UK)

Originally on her 2022 album 'Edyf', this is a live version from the 2023 Lleisiau Eraill Aberteifi (Other Voices Cardigan) festival, because watching her play the Welsh triple harp is captivating.

My living room is filled with a strange twilight. From the south-facing window, in a yellow sky, a large group of geese fly towards the Irish sea; below, the traffic is starting to build, ruining the scene with its annoying noise and lights.

A cold rainy morning. The town and hills are obscured by mist. From the living room window, I can see as far as the school which is around 300 metres away. The weather says it's going to rain until Wednesday week. Ugh.

Tea, beetroot crackers with Wensleydale and gherkins for breakfast.

Calan Gaeaf: the late-afternoon sky is streaked with long cirrus clouds; at sunset they are obscured by their darkening cumulus cousins. The light fails quickly and the room suddenly feels cold and depressingly colourless; turning the lamp on only seems to add to the evening's dreariness.
