Fugitive from academia. Currently plying the Pacific.
If they have the will to actually do it, it'll be great for the industry. (Also, did a deckie write this?)

I get adequate shore leave and feel pretty lucky in that regard, but so many mariners don't. They deserve better.

Spinning Zep III and bringing order out of chaos out here in the Fernglade. Only executive decision on alphabetization was to stick Abba's Greatest behind Alice in Chains.

The defense team presses Lairmore on whether the sandwich really 'exploded.' They return to the photo of the sandwich and wrapper on the ground.

"That sandwich hasn't exploded at all, has it?" defense asks.

"It looks like a little bit is coming out towards the bottom," Lairmore replies.

Hard to imagine a more sinister & dangerous argument, couched in euphemism & high-minded language. "This essay does not argue liberalism will collapse, only that [US] military officers should be intellectually (and spiritually) prepared for alternatives." warontherocks.com/2025/10/the-...

Now spinning Porcupine Tree's Fear of a Blank Planet. A great pressing of this magnificent album. If you know Porcupine Tree then you know. If you don't know them, but you like Pink Floyd, then you need to find em!

Now spinning a 45rpm pressing of Fleetwood Mac's Rumors. This is one of those must have albums in my opinion, and the 45rpm version is absolutely stellar.

New cairn terrier puppy here at the Fernglade. His name is Starbuck, after the 1st mate in Moby-Dick. Quite a lot of personality! Will miss him when I'm at sea. Sadly, he cannot join the crew.

Now spinning Old and in the Way, an incredible album that in it's way kept bluegrass alive for popular audiences through the 70s and 80s. This is a deeply important record in the grand scope of human history.

Now spinning Neil Diamond's Hot August Night, one of the best live albums out there. What a show that must've been! The mofi is a great pressing and, for a mofi, not expensive.

Now spinning Michael Jackson's Thriller. Crate dive find. 1st pressing. NM. Cover still in the shrink, w/ "The Girl is Mine" hype sticker. One original price tag shows $8.98. Then it was marked down to $6.49. So, im guessing it was sold in '84. Sound is amazing.

Now spinning Paul Simon's Graceland. I think this might be the last truly perfect album from a 60s rock star/ pop star. There are plenty of great ones, dont get me wrong. Bowie's Blackstar? But Graceland was huge and spectacular and important.

Now spinning. Elvis Costello's debut. Clean early US pressing ('78-'80) with Watching the Detectives. I'm guessing this leaves the sound a bit thinner than the UK version, which I'd like to find. Probably makes a big difference here.

Its quite disturbing seeing an otherwise intelligent man who has not grown or felt at all since he was a teenager, and who now occupies the summit of power.
The year is 2003.

17-year-old Stephen Miller is sitting in the back of a school bus talking about torture, as in “Torture is a celebration of human life and dignity."

Miller looks directly into the camera and describes the torturing Iraqis in gruesome detail, as his peers laugh uncomfortably.

Now spinning a mid 70s record club edition of Steely Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill. Great shape. Very listenable. But I'd love to find a better pressing. Saw them around '95 at the Gorge in WA. Best venue I've ever seen.

Now spinning Neil Young's After the Gold Rush. Southern Man of course leads to Sweet Home Alabama, but i only recently learned that Young wrote Powderfinger with the idea Skynyrd would play it. But then the plane crash. Wild. Anyway, Gold Rush is essential vinyl.
