These filaments are part of the interstellar medium in our galaxy, but from Earth’s perspective, they overlap the distant Andromeda, creating a surreal blend of near and far. Detecting them required long exposure times, Ha filter, and the dark skies of the Atacama desert.

Beyond the galaxy’s sweeping spiral arms and its companions M32 and M110, there’s something subtle yet striking: faint hydrogen clouds (Hα) drifting across the foreground, belonging not to Andromeda, but to our own Milky Way.

that sounds like an amazing sensorial experience.

These dark nebulae lie about 500 light-years from our Solar System and are active regions of star formation.

The frame includes the Moa, Fingerprint, and Waving Flames nebulae, as well as the galaxy IC 3104, names that are not widely known, since this region, being close to the South Celestial Pole, has been poorly cataloged.

I added some narrowband data in order to hightlight more this star-forming regions.

The LMC’s asymmetry and tidal features are a result of gravitational interactions with both the Milky Way and the Small Magellanic Cloud.

The LMC is an irregular dwarf galaxy located approximately 160,000 light-years away, orbiting the Milky Way.

This image highlights key regions including the Tarantula Nebula (30 Doradus), NGC 1850, and various star-forming complexes embedded in dense hydrogen clouds.

The final result reveals not just the iconic silhouette, but also the complex interplay between dust, light, and structure in the galactic plane.

This is a collaborative image with @dompe.space who capture the luminance data with a monochrome camera, while I captured the color data.

This region spans over 40 light-years and has extremely low surface brightness, making it a challenging target for both acquisition and processing. Capturing its subtle gradients required good skies, enough integration times, and careful processing.
September 26, 2025 at 5:37 PM
Its distinctive shape — resembling a horse’s head — is formed by dense clouds of interstellar dust that reflect the blue light of nearby stars, primarily Nu Scorpii.

Unlike emission nebulae, which glow due to ionized gas, reflection nebulae shine by scattering starlight.

Despite the heavy noise from a short exposure time (2h 15m), this wide-field capture reveals a surprising amount of detail, including the surrounding dusty filaments and the reflection nebula RfN VDB 109 in the lower right corner.
