Often approaching an owner was a good strategy for squatters, offering to pay a peppercorn rent to keep the house occupied was often accepted by the owner and made eviction harder.

The trouble was most squatters I knew couldn’t even reliably pay the peppercorn rent each month 🙄

During my childhood in the 80s, entire roads around where I lived in Hackney were derelict or squatted. It was normality for me so I was perplexed when family members visiting from out of town would ask why there were so many derelict houses around.
