Hello Lisbon
November 8, 2025 at 4:37 PM
Yesterday lunchtime: I’ll just quickly fit those mudguards to my daughter’s bike.

2.5 hours later, and after a load of hacksawing… I need a lie down now.

Ditching one of my last of these. It’s always amused me that Apple thought: £600+ for an iPhone but let’s supply the shittest quality cable we can.

17/ Last but not least CVC. Up & coming Welsh band. I’m getting The BeeGees and late Pink Floyd vibes. Literally bumped into them on the Dodgems at Wychwood Festival in May, so decided to go and see them. Felt like they need a little polish, but they’ve got the makings of a great band.

16/ Then a reggae band called Revelation Roots in Bristol. Part of the Devon reggae scene (what’s going on down there?). It’s great to see talented small bands that hardly anyone knows about. They were astonished we’d travelled from Oxford to see them, but I’d see them over many famous acts any day.

15/ The next night was Deadletter in Brixton. Up and coming post punk Iggy Pop/ The Hives vibes. (I’m getting too old for back-to-backs!). I’m also getting too old for the mosh pit. Broken bones for anyone over about 25.

14/ December now, and it’s The Baghdaddies farewell tour in Bristol. The original Balkan-ska crossover band, I’ve known these guys since university. They’re finally hanging up their horns and retiring. We spent quality time drinking in the bar with them after the gig. My head hurt the next day!

13/ Green Onions! It’s the James Taylor Quartet. Pure, unadulterated Hammond organ porn. Get that Lesley spinning and get yer 90s Acid Jazz flowery shirts out. Just amazing!

12/ The Gulls in Camden. OMG I love these guys. It’s like seeing Led Zeppelin or Marc Bolan in the late 60s, raw blues rock with a bit of glam. One of the best rock gig’s I’ve ever been to! I don’t think they’ll get big, they’re in the wrong timeline. Should have been around in the 70s (or 90s).

11/ The Undercover Hippy in Luton. Reggae political/ protest singer-songwriter. Not sure how these guys aren’t more well-known, but I guess it’s not the kind of thing the young people are listening to these days.

10/ The Leylines at The Jericho Tavern in Oxford in September. Great folk-rock band, only about 20 people in the audience. If you went to festivals in the 90s and drank cider, you’ll like them.
December 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
9/ Gino Washington at Bunkfest, my parents used to go to see him in the 60s, I last saw him in 1993 and he was getting on then. he’s now in his 80s.
December 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
8/ Also saw The Lottery Winners. Last year they were playing small venues, they said this was by far their biggest gig ever, next year they’re supporting Robbie Williams on his stadium tour!
December 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
7/ Then Beautiful Days Festival in August. Big acts included The Saw Doctors, Richard Ashcroft, and of course The Levellers, but it was the small bands that blew me away this year. Too many to mention.
December 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
6/ The National at the Eden Project in July, managed to catch COVID there. Nuff said about that.
December 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
5/ Then OMG Nostalgia overload, Dreadzone in Bristol Harbour at a reggae all-dayer in June, Trancy-90s dub-dance crossover. Last time I saw these guys was at Madstock, Finsbury Park in the 90s.
December 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
4/ The Smashing Pumpkins and Weezer at the O2 in June. Never been a big fan of the Pumpkins, but Weezer bought back some memories.
December 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
3/ Wychwood Festival at the end of May was a great place to find some new bands, but there were some big old-time there too including Texas, The Coral, Lightning Seeds and Dexys. Never been a big fan of Texas, but they were awesome live. Dexys on the other hand were truly dreadful.
December 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
2/ Drop in the Ocean, Skankfest in Bristol - Great young reggae band from the South West. There’s a lot of reggae going on down in Devon it seems!
December 24, 2024 at 7:16 PM
1/ Starting last March - The Men they Couldn’t Hang, Oxford. Folk-rock old timers from the 80s.
