Today was a pretty wild day for January #butterflies here in Carlsbad. Stuff is coming out early. Or, they never left. Couple of surprises.
Probable Ceraunus Blue resting wings closed on a bare twig in a grassy field. Same Blue, in flight and revealing dorsal wing surface. Gray Hairstreak on Sumac, standing guard. Ventral wing pattern visible. Same Hairstreak, wings open to show interference coloration on the dorsal wing surface.

Today’s #butterfly journey takes us to the eastern portion of Daley Ranch, north of Escondido. There were Pieridae in the ranch house area, but atop Stanley Peak we had Vanessa sp again hilltopping with Erynnis tristis.

This is what happens to me when a #butterfly goes by in January and I don’t get the camera angle right. Nymphalis antiopa of course, producing the shadow. Usually they come back to harass me but this one didn’t.
The edge of a foliage-lined pathway with the crisp shadow of a butterfly, meaning I missed the actual butterfly with my camera.

Here's an updated cover for my new #novel #sabot, ready for publication. I'm editing the story now; got most of the obvious typos out of it, and I'm looking for consistency errors. But I should have the #ebook out in a month or so.
