It’s hard to imagine these days that there was a drinking establishment on Rockaway, but there you have it. The downside here of course is that nearby residents ended up with no amenities whatsoever, and the Inn was turned into housing. 2/

At the time Hawaii was still a U.S. territory (it achieved statehood in 1959h and Prof. Pecker’s role as French consul likely revolved around assisting French citizens visiting or living in the territory. 4/

Today meet Professor Irving Pecker. Raised in Marblehead, Prof. Pecker would go on to join the faculty at the University of Hawaii. And, owing to his French language skills, was appointed French consul for the territory. 3/

This shouldn’t be surprising given its coastal location and the town’s economic orientation to the sea for much of its history. And clearly for some of its residents, a sense of adventure was the result. 2/

Today, 4,500 people in Marblehead claim some form of benefit from the Social Security Administration, nearly 23% of the population. This makes it the fastest growing population bloc in the town. 2/

Today, Marblehead’s railway line is now a walking path. The mass transit is gone but the complaints about traffic remain, except now they’re about West Shore Drive. 5/

And further that the train should run express from Marblehead to Boston, or at least from Lynn given Boston was the final destination of most of the train’s passengers! 4/

Because yes, Marblehead has a train line with not one but three stops. And it was so busy that the 7.22am train was full before reaching Swampscott! Indeed the Select Board member reckoned demand was high enough for not four cars but six. 3/
