Something a bit more trivial (but fun!) this time around. In 1967 the Rockaway Inn on Rockaway Ave. burned down and when the owner tried to get permission to rebuild, local residents turned out in force to block his permit. 1/

Today, Marblehead can seem like a quiet, sleepy place, out of the way of the goings on in the bug, wide world.

But historically Marblehead was always a place both subject to and ready to take advantage of changes in the wider world. 1/

In 2024, Marblehead signaled its NIMBY tendencies and its willingness to inhibit the economic growth of the Commonwealth by voting against a zoning plan compliant with the MBTA Communities Act. 1/

Social Security has always been an important program for Marblehead. In 1968, President Johnson’s increase in benefits made the front page as it affected 2,573 Marblehead residents, or about 13% of the population. 1/

In the mid 1920s, Marblehead residents became interested in the Ku Klux Klan as a way of preserving the town’s “White Protestant Americanism”.

Two meetings were held in late 1925 and regular meetings scheduled throughout 1926 by Reverend Park. 1/
