Lichtenberg discovered his famous figures using an electrophorus - a primitive capacitor charged by rubbing with cat fur. The voltaic pile wouldn’t be discovered until shortly after Lichtenberg’s death. Interestingly, Maxwell still uses similar methods in his Elementary Treatise.

Every European that has a reasonable claim to have proven 1+1 =2 (Peano, Dedekind, Frege) was bearded and every Englishman with that claim (Russell, Whitehead) was clean shaven.
