Anna's Archive (.org) is basically just The New Libgen for me, esp. since libgen went down for me (or at least the urls I used); it's quite convenient and has a very pretty UI but idk how much variety it holds.

not quite the same thing but maybe town management games that slowly evolved to have rpg mechanics? like Digimon World has the same thing of "you have a main town and everything revolves around it" but it's less a linear story and feels more like a survival game with expeditions and toilet trips

i'd say it's the handheld era, where rpgs were made to be broken up into digestible bytesized chunks with distinct start and end points; and around the same time that style of kids anime was popular. Though Trails in the Sky to me has a similar format (though in a dif town each chunk) and that's pc
