The Reasons (REsolved ALMA and SMA Observations of Nearby Stars) survey analyzed 74 belts of planetesimals belonging to stars within 500 ly from the Sun and found an incredible variety of ages, shapes and sizes.

The image shows belts of planetesimals belonging to stars within 500 ly from the Sun, analyzed by the The Reasons (REsolved ALMA and SMA Observations of Nearby Stars) survey. You see an incredible variety of shapes and sizes. Some appear as narrow rings, as in the canonical picture of a ‘belt’ like our Solar System’s Edgeworth-Kuiper belt, but a larger number of them are wide, and better described as ‘disks’ rather than rings.
