After I landed, I checked the WAAS availability map, which indicated that the whole western US could expect to not have WAAS coverage, so we wouldn’t get the best GPS approaches. To the best of my knowledge, this was due to the solar weather you’re describing.

On the 19th, I tried to fly the RNAV 16 approach at Orcas Island- everything appeared normal until I was joining the final approach segment, at which point the GPS briefly deleted my CDI and gave me a message telling me I had to use LNAV minimums. Raised my MDA by 120’.

I can speak a bit to the practical effects of what pilots see- we are still able to fly basic LNAV GPS approaches, but modern enhanced WAAS approaches (which generally get you closer to the ground before you have to see something) get degraded first.

Yep, if repairs are easy to make at a home base and if a replacement aircraft is readily available at that home base. (Also possible they’re just lying about the severity of the issue.)

They always park on the sidewalk next to Beacon Hill station too, made easier by the fact that it’s a curbless design with no bollards to keep people off what’s supposed to be the sidewalk.

that’s insane. it’s “just” an oversized truck demolishing itself and some bike lane barriers. no idea why it would be restricted for any reason.

It’s not the first, or even second time this has happened- those barriers have been repeatedly nudged into the bike path by negligent drivers.
