The last month I’ve been rewriting automated tests that were written by GenAI. While they (kind of) worked, they were extremely fragile and basically unreadable. It was challenging to understand what was being tested, and expanding the tests was turning into a multi day exercise.

“Add more AI” is a solution, but then you’ll need to expand your tests. And at some point engineers start being test engineers, which requires a whole other skill set. You can ourorobus your way to AIGen tests, but you have to trust at some point.

One thing about GenAI and software engineering is extensibility. While we can test functionality (and automate those tests). It’s not as obvious if the code is extendable to different use cases.
