Outdoor hydroponic system at University of Guelph lets us grow soybean in any combination of N supply, rhizobial inoculation, and drought stress level. Currently being used to test foliar N products, including biologicals.

Exam-grading season can be depressing, when I am faced with the stark realization that only a small fraction of the students truly completed the journey I was hoping to guide them on. But then sometimes one of them says or does something that buoys my spirits.

Growing a #canola crop indoors to teach students canopy-scale concepts in #cropphysiology in the wintertime. Left of the stick, 44 plants per m2. Right of the stick is 88. Plant population barely affects crop biomass or yield.

Today I was reminded why I love #teaching grad students. Two weeks ago none of them had ever heard of chlorophyll fluorescence or the xanthophyll cycle. Today we discussed a very exciting paper in Science that related to both, and they GOT IT, and had smart opinions to share. So satisfying. ♥️

#Soybean plants grown in the greenhouse with the same macro- and micronutrients, but plant on the left had most #potassium supplied as KCl (muriate of potash). This is chloride injury. #fertilizer #agriculture #crops
