We were already packing and driving the other direction. I was surprised the roads was not congested. Later that night, four hours later 5000 people were dramatically evacuated…?

Your in depth article rings true to me. I was in Crete this summer when a fire broke out near where we were staying on the southern coast near Ierapetra. We are from California and know quite well how far embers blow. We received a warning message on our phones, but not mandatory evacuation notice
