In the late '90s (5 years after arriving to live in Spain) I went on holiday to Teruel (mountainous middle of Spain) in a small farmhouse. The owner came to meet us, and after a while he realised we were socialist - how happy that made him! I couldn't believe it could still be relevant.

My partner was born in '72, and her grandparents lived through the civil war. Her parents were bought up in the fascist postwar period, and democracy began again in the late '70s. This democracy was absolutely determined by fascism, however; many fascist institutions simply changed name.

The House would continue to pass anti-lynching legislation and the Senate would continue to not even both to bring it up for a vote FOR AN ENTIRE CENTURY. And then finally, in 2022 they caved and the Emmitt Till Anti-Lynching Act was signed into law. deathpenaltyinfo.org/more-than-a-...

Bougainvillea can't grow in our garden, as the first heavy frost kills them. Yet only 15km down the road towards the coast there are no heavy frosts and they grow beautifully. A little frustrating!
