José Ramírez’ children’s books are wonderful complements to our study of systems & relationships in the desert & our community. Kids also created an #art piece w/ self portraits placed on a canvas w/our school in the background. Shit’s dark but children are bright lights. #bilingualed #duallanguage

Collage/ painting by 6-8 yr old students inspired by José Ramírez’ work, LA artist. We read his books, studied his work, & sketched before creating a plant/animal on black paper w/ oil pastels. Kids used acrylic paint on canvas & re-outlined plants/animals & abstract shapes w/ oil pastels.

Alternatively, you could pair Pitu le baila al mar w/ Wepa (a lovely #bilingual story about a girl named Mia w/ #ADHD) & ask children to compare & contrast the main characters. Would they be friends? What do they both learn? Normalizing difference is more important in our work now than ever. #edusky

I love to pair my his book w/ other texts that celebrate & normalize difference. Pairing this book with Bodies are Cool/ Los cuerpos son geniales & asking children to reflect on something they love about their bodies that makes them different is a lovely conversation starter. #ABAR

The world’s chaotic but reading grounds us. Pitu le baila al mar is the story of an afrolatina girl who loves to dance. She navigates challenges w/ 2 loving mothers who affirm that any body type can dance. Perfect story to discuss family structure, body stereotypes, & identity. #duallanguage #edusky

As an educator, I’m striving to humanize and highlight folks who are being dehumanized and othered. #Readalouds are an amazing tool. This is a great read about unhoused people.

Read about trans people, BIPOC, immigrants, activists, poor people… #edusky

Teachers can use the book to focus on #systemsthinking. What community service would help people when they x, y z? This can lead to service projects or working with existing organizations in the community.

To explain how some people become unhoused, the child’s father says people have roots like trees. Family, friends, jobs & health are our roots-they can get damaged & sometimes it’s not our fault. The book gives humanizing examples of “normal” people who lose a job or become ill & unhoused.

The world’s a cliff crumbling into the sea, but we have books. Una historia diferente is about a child trying to understand unhoused people in her community. This conversation starter can help launch a canned food drive, care packages for unhoused people, volunteering opportunities… #edusky #langsky

The message is that prison changes things but it doesn’t change the love we have. It’s a beautiful book that is perfect for children K-12. It builds #empathy and awareness. #bilingualeducation #abolition

Kids said: “If you make a mistake you shouldn’t be separated from your family.” “I thought people who go to jail are bad. The brother is nice!” “Only some people can pay bail to get out. That’s not fair.” We had a developmentally appropriate convo about bail & kids were shocked at the injustice.

In an effort to share small acts of resistance, I’m going to share some beautiful #readalouds that my #duallanguage students loved & that sparked fruitful conversations. My Brother is Away/Mi hermano está lejos is about a girl whose brother is incarcerated. Read on to hear student ideas. #abolition

Returning to school & holding Mary Oliver’s words in my heart.

“it is a serious thing

just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world…

It could mean something.
It could mean everything.”

Good morning #edusky and #langsky. Enjoy this utterly delightful poem written by a 7
-year-old. My students have been learning about ritmo, onomatopeya y personificación. I’m totally tickled by this kid’s voice and the conceit. Teach poetry! Let kids write about what they want.
