He's still trying to be respectful of her. So he has his eyes closed when she gets closer to him.

"That sounds lonely," Adol mentioned. A part of adventure meant that you were always making new friends and bonds! He was open to befriending machines, but there was something special about the human touch.

Adol only just walks in on the carnage after the fact. It was pretty clear what happened, another squad of those strange mechs had attacked Raye.
