Back before stencil paper was a thing, tattooers would etch their design into a piece of acetate. Then they would rub graphite powder into the grooves, and wipe off the excess. A thin layer of petroleum jelly was rubbed onto the skin and then the acetate was pressed on. When removed, it left behind
