Mercurial, like three cats under an overcoat.
Much like you, though, the reason they make me so angry is that I feel we share similar goals re: outcomes but they keep doing dumb things that fuck it up.

There is also a personality clash. I have engaged with various "leftist" groups in my life and there's a particular personality that often crops up that I can identify and just don't get on with.
July 6, 2025 at 7:17 AM
The self identity thing is something I've thought a lot about lately. I identify against the left on some level, because I consider myself a progressive/demsoc/normie lib and separating myself from them is a distinction I want to make.
July 6, 2025 at 7:17 AM
I do think there's a discussion to be had around whether these people are more attached to their professed ideals of making life better for people or whether it's mostly for funsies. The few actual leftists I know irl are decent people who do try to make a difference.

It's because they are the same people who would otherwise be susceptible to MAGA, but their personal environments/proclivities/social group/whatever landed them on the left instead.

They didn't reason themselves into their position.

The media is a large industry that encompasses more than the organizations you've touched on here. Things are not monocausal.

Profit is absolutely a "primary motive" for many organizations, as one would expect. I know this because I have personal experience in the field. That's all I was saying.

This is becoming gross. He's a black pundit. His ideas aren't unimpeachable. I don't know why you'd think they were.

Anyway, I don't think this is going any further.

Pony up what? He's a dude with a job he's got on merits and he's as vulnerable on merits as anyone else? Why should we hold back on discussing his demonstrated ethics?
July 5, 2025 at 1:17 PM
I think we can judge him on merits. What does dark skin have to do with this? He's a very good writer and his ideas aren't hard to understand.

And, by "plan on" I mean I've been in my place for over 10 years and it's incredibly cheap compared to other units in my building.
July 5, 2025 at 11:28 AM
Unless you want to own a home. Trust me, I've checked. The housing crisis is here too. I'm aware of the economics of rent control but, boy howdy, do I plan on benefiting from it.
July 5, 2025 at 11:26 AM
It's not the place it was 25 years ago. It's a *much* nicer city now with a lot more public infrastructure and things to do on the cheap.

Ugh. *where most people

Anyway, apologies for rambling. Montreal is a thriving metropolis, where the most people are bilingual, held back by the depredations of the provincial government. Same story as the rest of the world.
July 5, 2025 at 10:48 AM
So, between The Gazette and CJAD, this was anglophone culture in Montreal when I grew up. These institutions have all but faded away. Casualties of the internet.
July 5, 2025 at 10:42 AM
That makes sense. Have you ever heard of Bowser & Blue or The Anglo Guide to Survival in Quebec?

They're cultural products of the era and how I learned about the flight down the 401 as a child (in the early 90s). They're interesting in part because it's such a unique dynamic and subculture.
July 5, 2025 at 10:27 AM
Holy shit! Your family left because of Bill 101?

Sorry, this is just slightly before my time and I've heard/read so much about it but I've met so few people who've actually experienced it.

I'm anglophone de souche, for what it's worth ;)

Isn't the obvious retort here, "then I guess his values have price?"

(I don't think he should resign and, to my knowledge, Jamelle has not ever called for anyone else to resign and I've always found him very measured, so I don't think he's being hypocritical in his decision.)

When, in reality, whatever their expertise, these are just people posting and they don't necessarily have more insight into moral issues than anyone else - even if they front it, which they frequently do. They're all still playing the poasters' game, one way or another.
July 5, 2025 at 5:25 AM
Being a big account is similar to being a book, in the sense that people will believe what they read because of the implied authority. It's in a book, it must be true!
July 5, 2025 at 5:25 AM
For what it's worth, I think Jamelle is right to stay.

That having been said, and this is going to be inarticulate, I think the moral authority wielded by popular accounts is under examined by both the readers and the posters themselves.

Just a heads up, if you keep threatening to cancel they will keep discounting your subscription to keep you. I'm currently paying 0.50 CAD a week for the next year for all their content.

I am glad I'm not the only one who made this connection.

It may be the case that they're worried about losing the centrists and moderates? I've never really understood the reasoning.
