Alaska, urbanism is cool. Dignified transportation is a human right

~10 Degrees outside

The kid & I took the bus Sat night to see a hockey game. (There isn’t a bus past 8pm on Saturdays-ask us how we know🤦🏼‍♀️)

It was ~10degrees out. The route got dicey as we got closer to the Sullivan arena. An off-ramp cuts off any path from the north. Over 5K at the game!

Unfortunately us standards require farside placement for primary signal heads. Agencies *could add supplemental signals near side but they would be extra

Pretty rich of Dunleavy to accuse others of "not caring" for children. 🤕 🏥 How many Alaskans are suffering from his funding cuts these past 7 years?! for services across the state?!

Feds for Medicaid-->Denali Care.

At a Smurfs showing with the kid and we can’t escape the auto propaganda.

Glorifying drag racing in a multi-ton tank will continue to kill Americans.

This looks to be near some #TSDO no?

#Anchorage could have cool urban connections too! We don’t need to settle for stressful, Soviet-era sidewalks

We’ve been asking for safer, more connected non-motorized infrastructure.

Bicycling supports children’s independence and overall health in a way that many activities cannot—yet fewer kids than ever are out riding on their own, @erin_sagen reports:

36th and LaTouche was a hard turn from a narrow sidewalk where all the brush pushed me closer to the roadway.

Latouche wasn't too bad- low traffic and lower speeds with a shoulder.

All in all a stressful ride in great weather conditions as a confident rider...

There is no need for these 3 half-ass driveways to New Sagaya. They don't need these driveways and it's just miserably pot holed all over the sidewalk.

Drivers don't like potholes, neither do people walking and biking or pushing a stroller or a walker.

This really sucked to cross because there was a car queueing to turn left onto Barrow Street while another car was trying to take a right onto 36th from Barrow. I had to look both Left yet turn right to navigate the far back ramp locations.

Came across this construction zone. At least they didn't close the crossing- I see some intent to maintain the access...

This driveway was so slanted I thought I might wipe out...on there ain't ice on it!

Google suggests Tudor Road as the main route. the trees are now hanging way into the sidewalk in many sections. sidewalk is probably 5-6' wide tops- traffic whizzing by.
July 1, 2025 at 8:35 AM
There's no Street view for pathways so I can't show you what it looks like but let me just say it isn't intuitive and is pretty sketch to do alone.

brush is tall, no view line to the roadway, dark tunnel, loud traffic.
July 1, 2025 at 8:35 AM
Frontage Road was pretty low stress-Only 1 car passed me and gave me lots of space.
The end of the frontage means I have to cross this massive intersection. Luckily it is relatively low traffic volume so I can wait until there is lots of gap time to cross. it's ~50' across to the trail.

A friend said she wanted to bike to work but didn't know a good route- I told her I would trial it for her going off the Google Directions option and report back. This is how it went...🧵

Even though this happened stateside, over-serving needs checks and balances here too.

This guy likely bar hopped and had he been asked to show his ID a bartender would notice him fumbling for a basic task.

This sums up the general contempt for pedestrians that agencies have in the US-especially #Anchorage Alaska.

‘Just make do. What are you complaining about?’

Back on Amtrak to Chicago, then Chicago Union Station to ride to Port Huron.

Blue Water Transit fixed route bus to downtown. For a town of 35K, port Huron has great transit frequency. Unfortunately bus stops lack ADA compliant loading areas

Grand Canyon Railway is a private train that coordinates with Amtrak for smooth transfer from Flagstaff to Williams, AZ. ~2 hour ride to South Rim of NPS.

Grand Canyon has great shuttles with short headways and bike racks!

Back to Union station to catch Amtrak, Amtrak roomette

Not pictured: Disneyland train! It’s 5/8 scale steam engine!
