And it can actually be used the other way around. When you know that random deaths of seemingly random characters at the begging will not cause strong emotional reaction other than creating a small amount of shock value, you can use it for example for humor! Like they did in James Gunn Suicide Squad

That what separates for me the way Gantz O treats the deaths of side characters by establishing their personality and hopes even just a little and the abrupt deaths of side characters at the beginning of Hell's Paradise (I still enjoyed the show though)

It is important to establish some sort of plan, hopes, dreams, the character have. This way when its unexpected end comes, we can understand those dreams being crushed and extrapolate this to our own experience. And it will create much more emotions inside... 5/?

That's why in order for it to work in media we should already have at least some expectations for the characters. Otherwise it will be nothing more than a shock value of a viewer for 5-10 seconds... 4/?

The reason sudden death of characters in such manner is impactful because it mimics our real life fears of sudden death or unexpected failure of our hopes for the future... 3/?

When tropes are used without understanding them they feel boring and overused because the emotional impact they suppose to have is lost.
