A little insight into the hypocrisy of the Conservatives and Reform UK. They want a national inquiry into child grooming gangs. To do it, they've suggested a change to the government's Child Wellbeing and Schools Bill. The rules say if a change is made at this stage, the whole Bill is dead. That means no inquiry - but also no breakfast clubs. No making school uniforms cheaper. No keeping better tabs on children who fall out the system (vital after Sara Sharif). But if there is a vote, Labour MPs will have to vote against an inquiry to save the Bill. And you just know the right will milk that “Labour voted against an inquiry into child grooming gangs” angle for all it’s worth. The politicisation of this issue has to stop. It is disgustingly cynical. It will end up harming children.

A major boost in council funding for England has just been announced
£69 billion of funding will be injected into council budgets across England to help them drive forward the government’s Plan for Change through investment and reform and to fix the foundations of local government, ministers have announced today (Wednesday 18th December). The provisional Local Government Finance Settlement will provide £69 billion for councils across the country, a real-terms increase of 3.5% from 2024-25, which includes a new emergency £600 million Recovery Grant, offering better value for money through the repurposing of grants to help support councils most in need and maximise every penny of public spending to ensure it delivers for working people. And £3.7 billion of funding will be made available to social care authorities to support adult and children’s services through the Settlement. This includes £880 million for the Social Care Grant – an increase of £200 million compared to what was indicated last month, taking its total to £5.9 billion – which will support councils to deliver care for adults and children in their communities, helping to reduce pressure on the NHS.

We don’t need more austerity and cost savings. When two adults, working full time, can’t afford the cost of living we need a redistribution of wealth. At least poorer people will spend money and pay tax rather than hoard wealth and avoid tax 🤷‍♂️
