"This heaven gives me migraine."

Old enough to know better at the ends of the earth (New Zealand). I am large and contain multitudes, all of them intensely irritating. (Same-sex) married. Catholic. Conservative-ish. Cis-male. Jane Austen cultist.
THIS is what happens when you kinda watch THE PERIPHERAL and don't quite understand that is a dystopian hell scape infested with toxic tech oligarchs.

It's all fun and games until you're kept awake all night by Britt Ekland's bum double getting freaky with the party wall, then awake to an enigmatic but curiously insistent invitation to the local knock-off of Burning Man.

New Lynn Lions Club Dollar Book Sale today and came home with pretty good paperbacks of Michael King's biographies of Janet Frame and Frank Sargeson. Dripping literary patriotism!

"Political questions are far too serious to be left to the politicians."

Belated happy birthday to political philosopher HANNAH ARENDT, born on this yesterday (October 14) in 1906

Fair point - Practical politics being what it is, you can find yourself getting both credit and blame for things that had nowt to do with you and not a word of thanks for the things you busted your hump not to screw up. You want fair, go to the salon and get a blonde dye job!

Because libraries are magic (and a little bit spooky), guess what I'm #CurrentlyReading on Elmore Leonard's centennial? Cooler Than Cool: The Life and Work of Elmore Leonard (C. M. Kushins)

It really did just end up top of the library book pile this morning!

Found secret imagines of the girlfriends and the founder of ANTIFA (New Zealand Cell)

[Warning: This post contains a gag that will be utterly inscrutable to anyone who isn't a New Zealander who watched a lot of television in the early to mid-1980s.)

If you're inclined to be snotty about "media tie-in" books, I do hope you're not of the bookishly middlbrow vintage where every well-dressed bookshelf had at least one volume of John Mortimer's Rumpole stories - all made over from his scripts for the TV drama Rumpole of the Bailey. #BookSky

Wonder how long its going to take The Guardian to have to retract another fairy tale about magic bullets engraved with mystic runes in the Mines of Antifa?

BTW, if this has stimulated a craving for the more bizarro shores of noir pulp may I warmly recomment William Hjortsberg's FALLING ANGEL. Which also has a stylish but utterly nonsensical and loose as perished knicker elastic film adaptation...

Oooh! My turn - does Donald Trump 'know these people'? Are they from his wonderfully managed ancestral homeland of Germany?

If radical right-wing trash goblins read books instead of trying to ban them all, they might be familiar with the ending of The Tale of The Little Shepherd Boy Who Cried Wolf. And consider that little Presidents who cry "terrorist" too often might find themselves short of friends when they're needed

If you're not a British politics/media obsessive, and wondering why the hell Boris Johnson is attention-thirsty hot taking on a death thousands of miles from the UK his desperation to distract from this may explain everything

#CurrentlyReading (and disturbingly cheered by, the world being what it is) THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT: NEW TALES OF STEPHEN KING'S THE STAND (ed. Christopher Golden & Brian Keene). Only 3/34 stories in, and no B-grade fan-fic so far. #BookSky

Does anyone else want to get a nice hefty hardcover of Kay Thompson's Eloise books and smack some sense upside Chris Bishop's empty little head?
September 1, 2025 at 11:15 AM
Sure. OK. Whatever.

I'd like Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling and Paul Mescal to take turns sitting on my face. That ain't going to happen either. And it isn't newsworthy.

Co-signing this. My treasured charity shop find copy of Diane Duane's unforgivably long out of print (AFAIK) SPOCK'S WORLD is dog-eared, turning brown and brittle, held together with rubber bands... Sure, it canonically unsound but so what? Still fantastic! #BookSky #StarTrek

I won't begrudge anyone a living in this toxic waste dump of an economy, but every time I see a bookseller offering "books by the foot" to interior decorators and stylists something in me dies a little.

It's been far too long since we spent a fantastic week in Vancouver, but MacLeod's Books on West Pender St. was (and I hope still is) exactly that kind of book-store. Not for the claustrophobic or dust sensitive. :)
