Sometimes I wonder if humanity's collective subconscious has a baseline of necessary misery and whenever things start to get too good we self-sabotage to swing the pendulum back the other direction, forever denying ourselves a near-utopia that is fully within our capabilities.

Yes, tariffs are a terrible idea, going to make life a lot harder for people who are already struggling. But "Oh no, we won't be able to order cheap crap made by children in sweatshops overseas and when it breaks in 3 months just throw it away and buy more!" is not a very progressive argument.
