Agree. Everyone should do philosophy.

Good. Very good!

Thank you! I'm of course not saying that there aren't strong sociological factors, but rather that the slow and primary underlying driver of the new theory adoption was theoretic virtue. I'm not sure how you could have really argued for phlog from around 1800. And you sure can't in 2025!
November 23, 2025 at 7:39 PM
Didn't Kuhn argue that the revolution in theory was ultimately driven by the superiority of the new explanation?
November 23, 2025 at 9:51 AM
And what motivated the choice, if purely sociological?
November 23, 2025 at 9:49 AM
Really? You think by 1800 and the discovery of oxygen that phlogiston was still a competitive hypothesis?

Take feared loss of last money. The object of fear is all the future *consequences* of that loss in terms of status, opportunities etc. Not the narrow event of a ledger transaction!
November 21, 2025 at 3:17 PM
Erm... because you fear the *future* news, just like any future event?
November 21, 2025 at 3:06 PM
lol. May try but a crabs life is a short one.

Aaargh! An AI bro! To be fair to them, along with generally machine learning, they do understand induction *much* better than philosophers.
November 21, 2025 at 2:38 PM
What's that?
November 21, 2025 at 2:15 PM
OTOH a low entropy macrostate boundary condition has many microstates compatible with higher entropy present. So don't need to pick out a highly unusual microstate with all the information cost.
November 21, 2025 at 2:13 PM
So you *could* posit a higher entropy "past" boundary condition but it would have to have *extremely* precise and unusual microstate to evolve to low entropy present. So very uncompact.3/4
November 21, 2025 at 2:11 PM
For example we prefer a single high energy particle to explain a track rather than a coincidental set of lower energy interactions. Higher entropy boundary conditions have to be highly specific to work. So seem ad hoc and massive coincidence. 2/3
November 21, 2025 at 2:09 PM
Yes but they're confused. Compact description *is* explanation, it does not require explanation. Every explanation posits the lowest entropy boundary condition that can be found AS an explanation. 1/2
November 21, 2025 at 2:07 PM
Yes, they do. A lower entropy boundary condition is always the most parsimonious (least algorithmic information) description of phenomena. Compact description is what we call explanation (in this sense).

This isn't even an intervention study. As the Finnish twin study showed, it's easy to overestimate direct effects of exercise on health from observational data, especially over only a few years.
November 5, 2025 at 1:32 PM
You would say that
November 3, 2025 at 6:54 PM
That's not why they are useful
November 2, 2025 at 9:46 AM
A hinged opinion.
October 14, 2025 at 3:09 PM
That is exactly the dispute as I understand it ( no special knowledge).

Ford CEO says it allows greater control. Apple apparently want to control the entire in car experience (climate control, instrument cluster, door locks etc).
