Pokémon used to do this, but these days they just mostly bank on familiarity to circumvent decent world building.
New games don't have that luxury, so you can't just make Pokémon but in a new dress.
You have to build your own world that the monsters are an intrinsic part of, and I have to believe it

Lots of mon tamers fall in the trap of having great designs, maybe even decent gameplay, but the mons devolve into being lifeless mechanics, instead of being characters just as much as any other story element.
They can all look amazing, but you have to convince me that they're part of the world.
