Bear, flâneur, hiker, repairman.

He/him/Dad.
My first CD: CD1 by Throbbing Gristle. Just like Bruce, I got a copy of this before actually getting a CD player; in 1986, they were exotic, but it was easy enough to borrow one from a high school classmate to listen to it.

Ironically, the first thing that comes to mind when I think about "coming out" is rejection - at 17, I joined the undergraduate gay men's support group at Cal, which was frustrating because none of the other men in that group were comfortable with my physical appearance and were kinda vocal about it

Almost forgot the obligatory Folsom Berlin mirror elevator selfie!

I’ve just arrived at Rocamadour. That’s 30 days hiking and 680 km from Cluny. Given the weather - just over 100 degrees - this is where my Camino ends. I’ve seen enough, as they say - time to take some time off, especially if there’s air conditioning!

Just found the perfect outfit for Folsom Europe... and of course the only shop that sells firefighters' apparel in France is on vacation for the next two weeks !

Why yes, I do prefer the bottom bunk

It’s Sunday morning. I woke up in a convent. I hit the 500 km walked mark on the Camino yesterday; I don’t have the (visa) time (or frankly the inclination!) to walk all the way to Santiago de Compostela, but I feel like I’ve proved the point already, as it were.

Maybe… but can you imagine me showing up at New Action looking like this?
July 31, 2025 at 2:22 PM
I suddenly realized that I’m kinda doing the same thing right this minute - enjoying an off-the-beaten-path part of France (that’s only if you aren’t French) 😬

I completed the GR765 yesterday - 340 km from Cluny to Le Puy-en-Velay. A moderately challenging walk, almost completely deserted (no other walkers most days, just 2 sisters who were walking 5 days of it), with some wonderful things to see.

If you thought CVS was bad… (as seen in a French supermarket today)

Just realized what the new Cat City Eagle logo reminds me of

Yes, Sir!

Dear France: I love you, but this is hardly an appropriate number of calories for a “hiker’s dinner” after walking 20 km in the heat. Cute, but c’mon! Two bites of a Blooming Onion probably has more calories than this “inverted Parmesan tarte”.

Is the French post office always this bad? Ordered an umbrella a week ago with 2-day delivery and all that’s happened is daily updates from La Poste that it’s delayed, that it couldn’t be delivered, and that maybe they’ll try again soon :/

Having arrived in Lyon, I am now eating a ripe Brie so gloriously stinky that I can’t beleive it’s legal. God bless France.
July 7, 2025 at 7:48 PM
Just checked in for my flight to Lyon and oh man, not happy about the weather - I start walking Friday and it's warmer there than here in the Colorado Desert. Climate change? Not a fan!

if y’all have any questions about Stockton, happy to answer them 😂

This is the closest I'll ever get to being on the same bill as Pavement, LOL

I grew up in Stockton, California; I went to the same elementary school as Spiral Stairs. Our Moms knew each other from the P.T.A. board, but I don't recall ever meeting Scott - he's a few years older.

I watched PAVEMENTS on the flight home from PDX last night & cannot recommend it highly enough.

Came across this picture of me and the hubs at the Stedelijk Museum some time ago - no idea when, guessing the early 2000s?

10 years ago today, I hiked from E. C. Manning Park to the USA-Canada border, which is sadly closed in both directions these days :/

Also sad: not only did that Tilley hat fall apart in Japan last April, they no longer sew them in Canada. That'll be my last one, sniff.

Merci ! Had to take the longer/easier trail as the shorter/steeper one was ‘dangerous’ according to the Henro museum staff after that rain, but oh man : perfect weather today. Butterflies everywhere. Amazing.
