The Centre for Agroecology, Water and Resilience (CAWR) is driving innovative research on the understanding and development of resilient food and water systems internationally.
The Gaia Foundation held their first in-person Seed Gathering in Wales in Oct. It convened seed savers, researchers & seed sovereignty campaigners for 2 days of workshops, demonstrations, presentations, art & celebration. Chris Maughan co-facilitated a session with the South West Grain Network.

Ffion Thomas recently passed the viva for her PhD on approaches to managing ash dieback disease using sustainable soil amendments. Her examiners were Jane Fisher (Centre for Alternative Technology & University of Liverpool) and Barbara Smith (CAWR).

At the IPPS Europe Conference 2025: Innovation Meets Efficiency, CAWR PhD researcher Victoria Adams shared her work on peat-free propagation media for ornamental plant production. Hosted in Peterborough 8-10th October it featured talks from a wide scope of the horticultural community.

CAWR’s Ulrich Schmutz & Judith Conroy represented the Coventry Agroecological Living Lab (CALL) at the 2nd meeting of the European Network of Agroecology Living Labs & Research Infrastructures & attended the International Forum on Agroecosystem Living Labs in Bordeaux, France.

In September CAWR colleagues began work on the Horizon Europe project WINN-ORGANIC (Widening INNovations for ORGANIC food). Partners aim to improve procurement of organic food through the creation of Organic Food Innovation Hubs, working towards the vision of ‘organic for all’.

Prismita Nursetyowati (Mita), a 2nd year PhD student in the cotutelle programme between Coventry Uni & Institut Teknologi Bandung, was selected to attend the São Paulo School of Advanced Science on Emerging Pollutants in Brazil, in September. Mita also presented her poster.

Ulrich Schmutz, Liz Trenchard, Sam Green, Judith Conroy & Rosemary Venn attended the Agroforestry Show, organised by the Soil Association & Woodland Trust at Woodoaks Farm. Liz & Sam participated in a session on scaling agroforestry through community tree nurseries.

As part of the research programme on Subtle Agroecologies, Julia Wright joined about 40 other international participants at the Pari Centre, Tuscany, Italy, for a collaborative enquiry into an expanded science that includes the inner world of subjective experience.

Project PLANET4B has researched plural values, intersectionality, attitudes & behavioural & institutional change for addressing biodiversity loss, across a range of settings in a transdisciplinary consortium of 16 partners. The closing event in Brussels featured presentations from the CAWR team.

In August at The Organic Growers Gathering, CAWR PhD Charlotte Southall spoke about Homeopathy for Growers with Lawrence Woodward OBE of Whole Health Agriculture. She's now looking to co-design on-farm homeopathy trials with UK growers to improve yields and tackle pest & disease problems.

On Wednesday the 10th of September CAWR held a Macmillan Coffee Morning in the kitchen. Staff and students enjoyed a selection of homemade and shop bought treats and raised £124 for a great cause.
