we need a new american dream

a reset from one that is wholly unsustainable - and increasingly unattainable

to one that is focused on community, affordability, livability, climate action and adaptation.

After Trump was elected, I started to wonder what could the grassroots, cities, and states do to move the needle on climate change without federal support. It turns out, a lot (gift link)
What Can US Cities and States Do for the Climate Under Trump? Plenty
Federal progress on climate may stall, but city halls and statehouses are in a good position to build on recent gains.

If we want better fashion culture in the US, we have to lower the cost of housing and commercial real estate, support independent craftspeople, build denser neighborhoods, improve walkability, and get rid of overly restrictive zoning laws. Let kook culture thrive.

Nearly every apartment or townhouse built today will be branded as "luxury," never mind that these units are often vastly cheaper than the single-family homes they replace.

some people really try to make housing policy more complicated than it needs to be, when the crux is actually quite simple:

if you make it easier to build more housing (through financing, zoning, building codes, etc.), more homes will be built and rents will go down

A few years ago this street in Amsterdam was converted from a regular street for all traffic into a bicycle only street. I filmed it just as the local primary school was finishing for the day.

Los Angeles' real potential lies in its 45,000 lane kilometres of streets.

Potential that was achieved in Culver City; who transformed less than one kilometre—200 metres of a four-lane arterial road—into 5,000 square metres of the most beautiful and welcoming public space in the entire region.

Great episode. WELL worth your time.
NEW! "Cars Are Done" with Adam McKay."

The Oscar–winner talks about the existential anxiety that led him to write and direct "Don’t Look Up" and why comedy is good for tackling big problems. Plus, why the age of the car is over… even if people don’t know it yet.

Drawing inspiration from Amsterdam and Utrecht, Paris recently opened a state-of-the-art 1,200-bike parking facility at Gare du Nord. A key link in a seamless and scalable intermodal system, it offers an elegant storage solution for local, regional and (inter)national passengers. 🧵

Here's the report. In it:
- a first-ever database of parking mandates across WA
- page after page of stories of shops, schools, daycares, & homes blocked for lack of parking spaces that would sit empty
- the "history of guesswork" that wrote these rules

Minimum parking requirements are paving over Washington, regardless of how much parking residents or businesses actually need.
