amazing thing about late Sartre is that he runs headlong into these sorts of dilemmas and you get to see him flailing on the page. he's never too embarrassed to be wrong in public and grapple with his errors and that's beautiful

(thinking of this in light of rose's judgment: instead of politicizing academia, they academized politics. I want to see the project of politicizing academia as it would have appeared to them!)

really fascinated by the horkheimer letter that benjamin quotes in the arcades project ("the dead are dead forever") and how B develops his concept of history as remembrance from that disagreement. wondered for a long time if H ever wrote on his side of the debate after they published the theses
