“Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein” offers us some great meme material, in the form of a remark by Lon Chaney, Jr. as the sad sack, always whining Lawrence Talbot/The Wolfman.

Going through the Universal monster movies in toto, it’s interesting to see which details from which films made their way into popular culture. The idea of Frankenstein’s monster in a black blazer comes from “Ghost of…” It’s ostensibly to help him blend in when Igor takes him through a town publicly

It seems like this should be an indelible moment in movie history, but I guess people don’t work their way down to “Ghost of Frankenstein,” the fourth film in the series, often enough.

It’s such a great detail that the Monster gets along w/kids who are just nice to him.

I’m really enjoying the directing of the Universal monster movies. A seemingly endless number of really carefully composed shots that are a joy

From “Ghost of Frankenstein” (dir. Earle C. Kenton) here’s Bela Lugosi as Igor & Lon Chaney, Jr. as the Monster, watching the Frankenstein castle explode.

Just finished a home double feature of The Mummy’s Ghost and The Mummy’s Curse.

The addition of a female mummy in “Curse” is much appreciated, and there are some very spooky-pretty shots of her wandering through the swamp. Rural Mass. in Ghost somehow became the bayou in Curse.)

Seems like the official Trump response isn’t “you’re wrong, we don’t want kings.” It’s “Yes, king.”

This is … perfect?

OK, I never anticipated that I’d acquire granular knowledge of this genre, but I can now add another answer to the question “Which sequels were better than the first film?”

“Revenge of the Creature” blows “Creature from the Black Lagoon” (which I like) away!

So much fun!

I was single-digit yrs old when mom brought a copy of this home from Stop & Shop for free with a coupon. Trying to remember a culture in which the supermarket gave you a Beethoven LP as a promotion.

The last gasps of midcentury “middlebrow” culture?

Picked this up at a thrift shop, sounds good!

But … this is a story about how digital distribution has upended a conflict that goes all the way back. Which acknowledges the history of the issue and argues that it’s more in the public conversation now.

There appears to be no bedrock American value or basic legal principle that NYT won’t cooly reduce to a “norm” — as in, a way polite people like to act but which is optional and up for negotiation.

12/31/99.

There probably “should” be a YEM exemption in this stat, since in some eras a standard version gets to the 20-minute mark … but I’m not sure I’ve heard people make that case in the past.

Post a perfect album from the 90s that isn’t Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, or Alice In Chains.

Recently I was talking on here w/ someone about the cool show posters by Gamelan Presents in the late ‘90s. I said I’d lost track of the two I saved, but no, they’re right where they’ve been since ‘97: the wall of my childhood bedroom.

Visiting Mom and came across some great Phish stubs I haven’t seen in a while.

What a great Sunday doubleheader! The Boston Red Sox won and then Phish won too.
