Oregon Native & Amateur urbanist. I made this account to talk about Urbanism and ways to improve this city and make it more livable
Expanding any train route, of course, has significant, political, finanical, and logistically issues and can’t be accomplished immediately

That said we should definitely do it so write your reps as often as possible

However, expanding the frequency of our main regional line alone is not enough. #orleg should fund developing new lines to unserved areas

A very limited train route to Astoria proved popular 2 decades ago,

Or we could actually make the WES service a functional line to Salem

The Washington DOT is working on planning future expansion and improvements. Their 2024 preliminary plan can be seen here,
Their simplest alternative aims for 6 daily trips from Eugene to Portland and 8 from Portland to Seattle

Ridership across the country is reaching all time highs

Cascades got a boost in ridership a few years ago by increasing daily round trips from Seattle to Portland

Our states should invest in infrastructure & support more daily trips along the cascades line

#amtrak #transitsky #rail #trains
Amtrak's annual ridership was up 5%, hitting an all-time record high of 34.5 million rides nationwide over the last year. Amtrak Cascades also hit a record high, reporting 1.4% growth and coming in just short of crossing the million-ride mark for the year.

I mean it is unclear what the results of that plan could look like. ODOT insists on expanding the freeway, and that always has to come first before building the caps

So I am unclear how the first phase can have equal elements of mainline and caps
December 12, 2025 at 4:12 PM
I don’t think anyone knows what it means?

And it’s kind of shady to come up with a “secret 4th option” that isn’t shown to the public until the meeting starts

Either way. I’m sure glad ODOT didn’t have anything more pressing that could really use 167 million ASAP

Like according to the article it’s moving forward with design and fund seeking, but with some elements re-addressed to make sure the phases

“ensure parity of mainline and cover elements”

The state stayed the course but in a weird way because a bunch of people collaborated to provide a 4th Option?

It’s difficult to explain to people that:

1) Oregon doesn’t actually spend enough to maintain our current infrastructure

And

2) none of those Highway expansions and road construction will fix traffic

So it’s easy to convince people that this is a pointless tax increase that has no benefit

If you live in Oregon, Please write your reps and tell them to prioritize bus, rail, and maintenance instead of road expansions

And while you’re at it, tell them to support raising taxes on the wealthy to make up for the federal cuts to social safety nets

ODOT has invested an immense amount of time and effort into this project, but the underlying goal was to widen a freeway significantly.

The lane expansion was first and foremost. Plus, given the lack of funding and growing cost, it’s unlikely in any scenario for the lids to be built

Furthermore, we cannot afford this project. The entire #orleg transportation package fight is because ODOT’s maintenance budget is broke.

Yet at the same time the Dept is trying to spend hundreds of millions to add lanes they cannot afford to maintain.

We have to stop this pattern

Highway expansions are not a solution. Besides the massive amount of construction traffic, even after completion congestion returns. Historically, adding more lanes means more driving

If we as a state car about the climate, we should be against this
