Today is National Poetry Day in the UK, so I'm sharing this by @mosababutoha.bsky.social - a Palestinian poet who writes of his experiences growing up in Gaza. This is from his collection "Things You May Find Hidden In My Ear". (Full text is in alt text if image is hard to read) #NationalPoetryDay
A poem from the collection: 'Things You May Find Hidden In My Ear' by Mosab Abu Toha "Leaving Childhood Behind" When I left, I left my childhood in the drawer and on the kitchen table. I left my toy horse in its plastic bag. I left without looking at the clock. I forget whether it was noon or evening. Our horse spent the night alone, no water, no grains for dinner. It must have thought we'd left to cook a meal for late guests or to make a cake for my sister's tenth birthday. I walked with my sister, down our road with no end. We sang a birthday song. The warplanes echoed across the heavens. My tired parents walked behind, my father clutching to his chest the keys to our house and to the stable. We arrived at a rescue station. News of the airstrikes roared on the radio. I hated death, but I hated life, too, when we had to walk to our drawn-out death, reciting our never-ending ode.

I've spent today making covers for my wee handbound books and my feet are aching from standing for cutting & pasting! I have definitely lost the knack from my days in retail!

Do you need a wee social media palate cleanser? Say no more!

I've been learning bookbinding and have started making tiny books! They're only wee, about 8cm, using recycled paper and card, with hand-marbled cover papers. I find the process so relaxing! 🥰

I walked in the radical block at Glasgow Pride today. Same as I did in Edinburgh last month, and will again in Stirling, later this summer. Now, more than ever, we need to recapture our protest roots. We need to reclaim our Pride.

I was a few stories into this anthology before I realised that it's aimed at kids, which either says something about the quality of the writing, or my reading level - probably both! 🤣

It's really good though, and I've been enjoying seeing how different writers imagine alternative climate futures. 💜

Same with my two (2.5yr old siblings). It's still baby steps with one of them - he'll sit for a wee while without being stroked then get restless and move, but his sister is leaning in to the idea, and it's lovely! It's funny how different stages seem to kick in almost like clockwork.
Starbuck, a short-haired brown and black stripey & spotty cat is spread out on my lap, with her head tucked in to the side and tail curled up. A wee bit like a furry prawn.

A long-haired cat with gray, black and brown stripes and a white chest and paws, sits on a high wooden shelf unit, which is very close to the ceiling. The cat is sitting staring straight up at the ceiling, for no obvious reason. This is fairly typical for this cat, who is a bit daft really.

I've been dipping my toe into some (very) amateur astrophotography over the last year. Just basic set-up, dSLR & tripod, but it's really nurturing my curiosity & delight.

Spent Yule gathering some cuttings from the garden to decorate the house a wee bit, and now having an alcohol-free cider to celebrate 10yrs of sobriety!

I saw the Knife Angel in Perth on Sat. Made by British Ironworks Centre from over 100,000 knives used in knife crime, collected during a UK amnesty, it stands 27ft & weighs 3.5tonnes. Some blades have been engraved by families devastated by knife violence. It was incredibly powerful to see it.

(🧵) Coming back to this thread to add this book: 'A Billion Black Anthropocenes or None' by Kathryn Yusoff.

Despite the geological focus, I have found this book helpful in reminding me to be reflective about language, and how we frame time, extinction, and afterlives.
