I know it isn’t the same thing, but last year my family of 4 literally paid less to fly to London, stay for 4 days, and do the TM “live experience” (plus a ton of other fun things) than it would cost for us to buy tickets from the resale sites to see TM 15 miles away in Boston in Jan.

I got the email on time but scalpers bought all the tickets immediately. I love Taskmaster but I’m not paying a scalper $1,700 per ticket to see them in person.

My experience too. 😭 Now we’re a “no hot surfaces in this house” family.

A large percentage of students don’t have even middle school math skills.

I pushed back on my son‘s school (in MA) for giving him a B+ in Alg 1 when he can’t do the simplest algebra problems. Their answer was, “He doesn’t need to know how to do the problems, he just has to pass to graduate.” Maybe some parents are the problem, but I think it’s the schools too.

Manchin continued to caucus with Dems, and had a voting record significantly to the left of Jim Justice. We don’t live in a perfect world, and we can’t have everything 100% the way we want it. I’d rather get 60% (or even 40%!) of what I want with a pol like Manchin, than NONE with Justice.
November 4, 2025 at 2:24 PM
Do you think someone to the left of Manchin could be elected in West Virginia? The last 7 presidential elections WV has voted (most to least recent): R +42, +39, +42, +27, +13, +13, +6.

What’s your proposal to get someone more liberal than Manchin elected there?
November 4, 2025 at 2:20 PM
In the last election, occasional/rate voters were more likely to vote for Trump & other Rs.
November 4, 2025 at 2:01 PM
Right, Jim Justice is a much better choice than Manchin. 🙄 The choice in places like West Virginia is not between a Manchin and someone to his left, it’s between Manchin and someone to his right.

If pols can’t change public perception of their goals, they won’t get elected. What seemed reasonable in 2018 isn’t going to work today. The situation is critical enough that pols stained by past unpopular opinions might need to step aside so pols who can get elected to save democracy have a chance.
November 4, 2025 at 1:14 PM
Also (this might be irrelevant to the article posted) the issue of preserving democracy in the US today is unprecedented. What I’ve read about pulling democracy back from the brink indicates it takes setting aside all moral stances except “elect honest, ethical leaders who will protect democracy.”
November 4, 2025 at 1:07 PM
That’s an oversimplification. In my circle of mod left friends, there was weak support for the stances that many Dems took strongly. If pressed on these issues, most of us would put signif caveats on our support. It’s reasonable to expect a good pol to understand & adjust for strong vs weak support.

This makes it look like he did know about the tattoo:

bsky.app/profile/eric...
Bernie about Platner,

“In all due respect, all right, what I'm worried about, 50,000 Americans may die unnecessarily? And you're worried about a tattoo?"

When I asked about his comments about sexual assault, he said "Have you served four tours of duty?" I said "I have not."

Bernie: "Ok"
October 23, 2025 at 1:34 PM
That’s a good point. It looks like Sanders’ defense of Platner was after the info about the tattoo came out on Tuesday, but it is not clear from the sources I have found whether Sanders was aware of it when he was doing the defending.

The wheelchair repair company we have to use for my son says that in their VM message. I have left over 40 message in the past 9 years and they have literally never returned one of my calls.

Shooting at/near an ICE facility in TX. Some conservatives made comments like “now THEY are attacking ICE agents” but as more info emerges it looks like no ICE officers were shot. Info is still murky, but people should wait to comment until it is clear what actually happened.

I have 3 kids. The 2 with autism—oldest & youngest—I took no acetaminophen during pregnancy; the 1 without autism, I did. (I understand science so I know this doesn’t prove anything. But I trust the studies that DO show acetaminophen doesn’t cause autism.)

I think of many of the people I grew up with who probably never learned the truth. (I didn’t learn until I went away to college.) A lot of them are the same people who see nothing wrong with the current admin’s actions trying to compel and restrain speech.

I grew up in rural schools in KS & OK in the 80s & this ruling clearly hadn’t fully made it there. You could be excused from participating if your parent made a specific request (not sure how that interview went) but students who independently declined to participate were berated & punished.

Don’t worry. Since they have no problem ignoring the Constitution they can just insist local citizens house them. 😒

He specifically does NOT want to use political capital. He says individuals who think it is important for universities to not cave to political pressure should support those schools in their efforts to resist government intervention, and that opposition party politicians should stay out of it.

Oh okay, I understand!
April 16, 2025 at 5:00 PM
If he appoints a special prosecutor who finds specific members of the Trump administration ordered the actions, doesn’t the DOJ still have to prosecute them? And if the DOJ refuses to prosecute them, what happens?
April 16, 2025 at 4:55 PM
This! I know lots of people that would participate in a well-organized, peaceful resistance. Do we do a national workers strike? A coordinated, multi-day buy-nothing movement? Daily marches…somewhere? What do we do? If it isn’t coordinated it won’t be effective.
