Though 69 years, and not a veteran, I feel so very much the same. I often think of my dad who missed a bombing raid in the Army Air Corps after developing severe air sickness, and after all of his team died in the raid, he was forever haunted by the tragedy.

Have been bonding with the hummingbirds at my peaceful Maryland Eastern Shore rental, and tonight, on the Autumnal Equinox and Rosh Hashanah, they finally paused long enough for a quick photo. A gift! They are fast feeders and flyers.

Flowers delivered today from Bloomsday Farm in Hyattsville, Md, made living in this crazoidal world much brighter. Thanks @beatgozon.bsky.social! #Maryland #Hyattsville #BloomsdayFarm

Left from a previous art exhibit at Antioch College’s Herndon Gallery in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Perfectly placed over the fire extinguisher.

’Tis the season in my funky #RiverdaleParkMaryland kitchen for #SummerSuppers with #CapreseSalad#tomatoes and #basil from my #CSA share with local Owl’s Nest Farm. The store-bought fresh #mozzarella not so local, but oh so good!

Run, don’t walk, to artist Aminah Robinson’s exhibit, Journeys Home, A Visual Memoir, at Ohio’s Springfield Museum of Art, B4 Monday, 7/14/2025, when it moves to its next U.S. tour stop. Savored the phenomenal 60-work show 2 weeks ago, & its magic has been with me ever since. www.springfieldart.net

Fruit oddity from my Maryland CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) share in August 2023. Made an impression! Jimmy Durante or Pinocchio tomato. Or perhaps something erotic?

Just dropped off my ballot for Maryland’s Prince George’s County Executive. Met some cool people at the Drop Box, which was heartening! In these weird, off-cycle, super-expensive Special Elections, I often feel like the only voter.

Breakfast assembly line, first Monday in June 2025. A Lemon House Farm egg rests atop Owl’s Nest Farm lettuce, radish, green onion, and parsley — all supported by an organic corn & wheat tortilla beneath, via La Tortilla Factory. Give me strength to survive this month in the Washington DC ‘hood!

And I experienced a very cool tour of Alcatraz in November 2009, when visiting longtime friend Susanne Siciliano in Marin. We had so much fun, we almost missed the last ferry out! Does not compare with current crazoidal plans, thank goodness!

Thanks! My father was Jewish; my mother Catholic; as an only child now in late adulthood, I try to honor them both. Troubling times, though I still put a menorah in the window last Hanukkah, and hung my mother’s (likely 70 years old) Christmas elf on the door (though it looks pretty pagan to me!)

Kent State University sought to dissociate from the May 4, 1970 student shootings & planned a gym facility on the site of the killing. Students from other Ohio colleges, like my Antioch College, arrived to protest the gym build. We resisted having history’s lessons buried & silenced. Still with me!

End-of-the-world rain & wind storms the last few days eventually sucked out my second-floor window screen. Searching for it this morning, I puzzled physics on where it landed so perfectly upright, but then thought it may have been gently placed at my door by a kind passerby. Going with #kindness

Used to sleep well, but no longer. And the nightmares! One of the worst mornings was 11/20/24; awakened to loud yelling & from my bedroom window, saw police cars all over & someone being handcuffed & removed next door. My heart raced with my first thought being OMG, they’ve begun the roundups early!

This happened in 2017 when I worked at the CDC; bought some shirts with the 7 banned words on them & wore them to staff meetings. Dusted off the sweatshirt edition today; almost donated it last year, though glad now I kept it. Coming in handy!

Am often seeing shape-shifting forms around my postage-stamp-sized yard; the annual mushroom face in my driveway has become a familiar friend each autumn.

A neighbor just shared photos of a DC Metrobus that drove into a #RiverdaleParkMaryland building up the street at our Town Center; sadly, the F4 bus driver has died. Feels like a continuing #omen for Monday, January 20, 2025. Maybe I’ll head back to bed!

At first, I thought an underground tunnel was being dug outside my window so I could escape Monday’s inauguration action, taking my Harris-Walz yard sign with me B4 bring labeled an infidel. Alas, it is just crumbling infrastructure. Washington Gas is replacing lines to neighboring homes. Sigh.

Thank you Roz Chast for helping put my current existential crisis in perspective — with a chuckle.

Schools & government offices are closed tomorrow— already; trash collection suspended, so I guess a storm is imminent. Another storm on January 6th in Washington DC. Have been in denial. Don’t even have my shovel by the door (for whatever comes!)

But I did remember to photograph breakfast today, with house-cured gravlox from Neopol Smokery with 2 poached eggs from my CSA with Lemon House Farm.

As odious as my neighborhood can be sometimes, along with the tensions one can feel in the air that emanate from the U.S. Capitol just a few miles away — nature saved the day yesterday with a spectacular sunset sky!

My renewed U.S. Passport arrived in the mail today! Such relief — giant sigh here, heard for miles. Felt an urgency this month to score an updated edition, pronto. A lovely welcome sign at my farm Airbnb near Marietta, Ohio, last month, yet am already envisioning a new life elsewhere. It looks good!

The most colorful cookie at the Farmers Market flagged me down to come home with me. Then, my favorite little plate, handcrafted by a friend, clattered up a racket in the kitchen cupboard to get out & meet that cookie! It’s the little things that bring me joy. The big things these days, not so much.
