I think I'm opposed to term limits but I am in favor of age limits. Serving a long time is kind of ok, as a counter balance to lobbyists. It takes time to get good at a job but right now we're ruled by a gerontocracy and that's not okay.

The 2017 Point Defiance Rail Disaster only happened because of I-5. That bridge was only built because I-5 would have otherwise chopped the line and they were too cheap to build a more gradual bridge. Also it was in the original WSDOT plan to replace but later cost engineered out.

The number of times I hear about rail when I bring up transit, is amazing. From advocates, or non-advocates. Even suburbanites who have never been on a transit vehicle say, we need Commuter Rail or we need Light Rail and that will solve their transit problems. It won't.
Do you find yourself in conversations with people who like to talk about how "they would never ride a bus" or who worry about "bus stigma"? I was just reminded of this 2017 article of mine, which tries to blow all that nonsense away. Hope you find it useful.

Why We Should Stop Talking About 'Bus Stigma'
Obsessing over trying to serve different economic classes on mass transit misses the point.

The Complete Streets movement began with a compelling, people-first vision: streets designed to be safe, accessible, and welcoming to everyone, not just cars.

But as this vision was absorbed into the federal transportation bureaucracy, it became a hollowed-out shell.

It bothers me how urban often means big city for people. I would be happy living in a small town, I just don't want to be at the outskirts far away from the action in town.

I tend to ponder the effect of CARB changing charging standards in 2001, to the conductive J1772, and incompatible with the inductive chargers the industry was actively pursuing. I wonder if that played a role in the cancellation of many of these EVs.

It's good to see upward mobility in such a vital region!
After much deliberation and a grueling interview process, I’m pleased to announce that I’ve accepted a new job and will not need any financial support from my parents to cover the high costs of childcare going forward. #AmericanDream #ThisIsYourCity

Let me get this straight, CAMPO wants drive alone travel times to decrease, while transit ridership increases and is willing to accept more carbon emissions to get there?

Here's the thing, I don't believe that Democrats could have gotten a better deal out of Republicans in order to reopen the government. I don't.

I also would not have had a problem with Republicans eliminating the filibuster in order to reopen the government and believe the filibuster is bad.

I don't want to live in a world where we assume the worst in people. People do bad things, and we shouldn't let ourselves be run over by them but to assume that strangers want bad things for us, is going too far.

I think I pretty firmly believe that without the ability to self-deal, really being an operating system vendor is a terrible industry to be in.

I often wonder what the world would look like if Enron and Blockbuster had been successful with in-home streaming.

Young people want cities to build transit and don't have the same aspirational relationship with cars their parents did. They grew up waiting for their parents to drive them around and don't want to put more people through that.

In my mind at least, the #1 lesson of Mamdani is to run younger candidates.

I always find it interesting that BRT has stations and streetcars have stops 🤷‍♀️

At a Light Rail station built in 2018, there's no real-time arrival and the paint is peeling. Also the signs are dirty.

I have this, likely fictitious, memory of someone saying "They gentrified the bus. They gentrified the goddam bus."
I had missed this post from Marco but I broadly agree: Down with BRT, long live the Bus

In late 2022, I moved to Raleigh. In the process I saw someone with a bike related name post on Reddit. I sent him a dm, asking if there's anything I should checkout once I moved. He and I started to chat, and became friends and he introduced me to the bar scene, which I'd been curious about.
Has anything great happened in your life because of social media?
