Living with a cat who has just been released to roam the whole house is like living with a furry little cryptid. You see them out of the corner of your eye and they occasionally emerge to chirp at you, accept pets, and eat some food, but otherwise they’re a source of mysterious noises in the night.

Laurie Magnus: Rayner acted "in good faith", had "the intention to pay all appropriate taxes", "was twice informed in writing" that the lower rate was due, "sought quickly to correct the mistake", "acted with integrity", but didn't seek expert advice.

The opposition to asylum seekers being housed in towns is like local reaction to new houses, wind farms, solar farms etc. But in this instance the far-right have been able to depict the objects of hate as murderers, rapists, and violent criminals, and the mainstream media have given them a platform.
