The canonical notion of anhedonia being a consummatory deficit holds strong in the literature. Using a taste test, we show relative increases in reward ratings during the consummatory phase in people with more severe anhedonia.

Using behavioral (taste test), clinical (MDD, controls), and metabolic (fasting levels of hormones) assessments we show (1) depression and anhedonia are associated with anticipatory deficits in wanting (2) depression and anhedonia are not an inability to experience pleasure during consummation (3) metabolic markers are associated with symptoms, not depression per se.
