I’m a high school biology teacher who 3D prints bones/fossils in my free time
If you see this, post a skeleton

I segmented the CT data from this paper and 3D printed the vertebrae, thanks for sharing it!

I’m gonna have to grab it! I really appreciate it when researchers like yourself make the data available! Dearc’s hand in particular is going to be super helpful for my current project of restoring the Tupandactylus described in 2022 as I’m stuck on how to accurately articulate its hand.

And even beyond this: my school just found out I do this for a hobby and they want me to write a curriculum proposal for a new class which I exciting that my school admin/department sees the value in 3D printing/photogrammetry

Totally fair! I will say that the first 2 sources I mentioned have a ton of free files so it is at least 1 less barrier for when you’re ready to do your own! MorphoSource is free but you have to request access to data a lot of the time, though I’ve had requests denied before

Thank you, and will do! I ised to make TikTok’s around this hobby but stopped once that law got passed in the US 9 months ago. I can’t transfer those videos due to music licensing differences between it and YouTube but I’ll probably start fresh there! And maybe stream a bit of my process too

It’s a mix of most of the above! The T. rex was a model sculpt I paid for, I rendered the Titanosaur skull from CT scan data, and the Stegoceras skull came from a database specializing in 3D meshes of primarily biological specimen. MorphoSource, SketchFab, and Cults3D are my big 3 sources for files

Yep! I use wood filler to fill gaps between larger split pieces and to smooth the print where it interfaced with the supports. Then I’ll paint a primer coat and see if need more filler and add more if needed. If not I’ll continue my painting process with a darker wash followed by a lighter dry brush

Most of the time I use any generic grey PLA but the brand I use most is Comgrow.
