Conversion therapies, also known as conversion practices, are efforts to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity. These practices are not just harmful, they do the opposite of what they claim.

Did conversion therapy laws in ~25 states accomplish much?

Not enough, unfortunately: No one was ever prosecuted, and only a half-dozen therapists were sanctioned.

What do we need instead:

The ex-gay and conversion therapy movements overlap with other poorly regulated industries that use residential facilities to abuse, control, exploit, and brainwash youths.

Muhsin Hendricks, a world-famous gay imam who learned after marriage that you can't "pray away the gay" and went on to offer shelter and healing to other LGBTQ Muslims, was shot dead today by assassins in his home country of South Africa.
Text by Moegsien Hendricks with a photograph of Muhsin Hendricks. The text reads: Cousin Muhsin, brother from another mother, best friend, often slept over during school holidays. We talked until the early hours of the morning. Mostly told each other dry Hendricks jokes. It was in one of those long conversations that he told me he was attracted to men. He shared that he fasted every Tuesday and Thursday for over a year. He regularly got up early to make special prayers to ask God to "cure" him. He felt guilty and was hoping the Almighty would answer his prayers. He was also hoping that by getting married he would feel different. Muhsin found peace when he made peace with himself. That prompted him to start an organisation to support others going through what he went through. He counselled many young people who were contemplating taking their own life because they were excommunicated by their family, and felt shame and guilt. Muhsin gave them a home, love and hope. A 2021 research study that promoted conversion therapy has been retracted by its publisher.

Translation from Spanish: COMUNICADO DEL ARZOBISPADO DE TOLEDO Ante las recientes informaciones aparecidas en algunos medios de comunicación, respecto de una supuesta investigación de la Fiscalía al Arzobispado de Toledo, este Arzobispado manifiesta: 1. Que en este Arzobispado no se ha recibido denuncia o queja alguna de ningún particular o asociación al respecto de la actividad de la asociación internacional "Courage" en el territorio de nuestra archidiócesis. 2. Que, frente a las afirmaciones publicadas, esta asociación declara en sus documentos fundacionales no practicar terapia de conversión alguna ni pedir a sus miembros ningún cambio de orientación sexual. Más bien, su actividad se desarrolla en clave de fortalecimiento espiritual y en la formación de grupos de amistad en los que las personas que participan libremente, siempre mayores de edad, comparten inquietudes semejantes y se ayudan a vivir cristianamente. 3. Que, como recientemente ha indicado Mons. Luis Argüello, presidente de la Conferencia Episcopal Española, la expresión «terapias de conversión» es imprecisa, amplia y no científica, que la Iglesia católica no apoya y que no se encuentra dentro del ámbito de su acción pastoral. Este Arzobispado comparte totalmente este criterio y declara que nunca ha realizado ni piensa realizar dichas «terapias». 4. Que las supuestas acusaciones de delitos de odio, discriminación o asociación ilícita recogidas en algunos medios resultan especialmente contradictorias. La Iglesia, siguiendo las enseñanzas y ejemplo de Jesucristo, busca continuamente acabar con toda discriminación injusta, haciendo objeto de su amor preferencial a todos los que la sufren (cf. Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, n. 2358). El Arzobispado de Toledo espera que estas aclaraciones contribuyan a poner luz en esta situación.
