When he turns off the screaming radio and washes my screaming body I feel whole. When he brings me rice prepared just the way I like it I know that I am a real human. When he carefully dries my hair I am not the lazy immigrant about whom they scream. I become a person again, the woman he loves.

My partner, working full time and caregiving full time, rubs his exhausted eyes, turns off the radio and helps me into the bath.

I lie in bed, unable to protest, unable to be part of the resistance, unable to keep my own body fed and clean without help. I listen to the news. I practice new swear words in German.
