Most of the backgrounds from the anime in the first season were made by Tadao Kubota and Takamura Mukuo. Mukuo was particularly a master of backgrounds. He died in 1992 in the middle of the season but the staff continued to have his name included in the credits until the very end of Sailor Stars
I’ve been doing a very casual Sailor Moon rewatch lately, and I really adore the watercolor impressionist vibe of the art design and backgrounds of the first season. Just too, too lovely.
