Writer and researcher in DC. Just my views here. Dopily pro-America, stridently anti-fascist.

Also: Brewery magnate. Deweyan progressive. Former stay-at-home dad. Primary caregiver.
Basically: this whole push for English-only is out of step with what families want AND with the research. It's bad politics (eventually) and bad policy. We should cut that out and invest more energy in building more bilingual schools.

3) However, majorities of families shared concerns about dual language programs, worrying that schools aren't prepared to effectively support students' bilingualism.

2) Latine families rank their interest in bilingual education and dual language immersion programs very high—nearly 8 on a 1 to 10 scale.

Note: We asked all demographics this, and Spanish-speaking families, highly educated families, and higher income families tend to rank these programs highest.

What did we find?
1) Strong majorities of Latine families think it's important that their children become bilingual. They're more enthusiastic about it than any other group.

Didn't have time for a better idea, so I'm reprising last year's costume. Thanks to Steve Buscemi for the inspiration.

And again, I tell you: pretty ok for an old working dad w/three kids. Might be retirement time on marathons though.

Might have to start selling these if they keep coming out so smooth.

Leaving aside any broader endorsement/non-endorsement of the argument, I can confirm that this was *also* the position of many Biden administration ppl working on K–12 education policies.

Not bad for an old guy with a bunch of nagging injuries. Just perfect running conditions out there.

Sometimes I think that, to make sense of our present chaos, the only thing you need from the Western canon is this passage from Plato's Republic.

Yeesh, #DCU, read the room. That was like the 3rd or 4th performance this season that would warrant a club making a public statement of apology + offering some sort of refund to fans.

Just had one of those "your photos from this day" emails pop up, and up popped this 6-months-into-a-pandemic shot. Yeesh.

Such a series of small numbers, relative to a city of DC's size. Such a minor public issue, relative to the amount of troops and weaponry brought onto DC streets as part of the "surge."

I keep thinking back to this part of the new DoJ guidance, which really gives the game away. Like, "multilingualism" in the US very regularly includes English proficiency.

So "deprioritizing multilingualism" here really means "choosing English-only monolingualism."

Lol. The perfect distillation of AI in my life. AI read the comments for me. AI is doing something “for me” that I 100% do not need or want done.

This was obvious a month or five (or 15 or 150) ago and should have been the driving framing of all coverage even vaguely related to fiscal issues
