Big Maryland vibes

Another small town near where I grew up had its #Pride this weekend - it was lovely visiting with my parents and seeing the place decked out in rainbows.

And as you can see from picture 4, even the Hetties were getting involved! 😉

A window display in an electrical shop. There's two fridge freezers, but also a big rainbow flag and three little 'Henry'-style vacuum cleaners wearing rainbow and flowery headbands. One of them is a pink 'Hetty' vacuum cleaner. There's also rainbow coloured paper decorations.

Really heartwarming to see #Pride displays in the small town where I grew up, like this one in the Children's Air Ambulance charity shop - seeing that would've made a big difference to young me! ❤️🌈

Our two cats sit on our TV cabinet, in front of the television. The cat on the left is black and white, and the cat on the right has tortoiseshell and white fur. The two cats are sitting up very primly, with their feet together and their tails tucked around their legs. Their tails are going in opposite directions, with one going clockwise and the other anticlockwise, so they're sort of mirror images of each other. They are both looking directly at the camera.

Happy #Caturday from... wait, which one's Nebula?

Glad to see someone in Parliament actually representing their constituents and asking the right questions, not just deferring to whatever the Telegraph or Mail tells them the law should be...

Following the guidance, issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on the practical implications for trans people of the Supreme Court ruling of 16 April, I am writing to seek your urgent response on these implications. This ruling and subsequent guidance from the EHRC has immediate consequences for trans people's ability to participate in daily life and for institutions and businesses providing facilities for patrons and the public. In places like hospitals, shops and restaurants, the new guidance says trans women should not be permitted to use women's facilities, but they should not be left with no facilities to use. This is extremely confusing and conflicts with the first sentence of your statement to the House last Tuesday following the "For Women Scotland Ltd v. The Scottish Ministers ruling. This guidance puts trans people at risk of discrimination and there are major and immediate questions about how its requirements would be funded and policed. Last week you told the House that the Govt stands for "dignity and respect for all, now and always", yet the wake of this guidance trans people are not being afforded clarity or respect. Therefore, I would like to seek clarity from you on the following: How is the Govt going to respond to both distress within the trans community and further confusion for employers, businesses and service providers who are trying to understand what the supreme court ruling means for them? What are the risks of encouraging vigilante policing of public facilities? Have Ministers considered that the Equality Act requires that providers of services avoid 'creating an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment' for people with protected characteristics (Section 26, Harassment)? The EHRC guidance is clearly correct that trans people must not be deprived of facilities, but as the Equality Act requires more than just the equal provision of services, there is a risk that following this EHRC guidance... ... would make this kind of 'intimidating' environment nearly impossible to avoid, with major risk to organisations of successful prosecutions. What discussions has your dept had with the EHRC about harassment, both of trans people and instances where non-trans women are harassed while using women's changing rooms or toilets if they are perceived as not looking feminine enough? What does this mean for trans men - what facilities are they supposed to use and what risks do they face as a result of this rushed guidance? Were trans, non-binary or intersex people consulted as part of the production of this guidance? What does this guidance mean for organisations that want to continue to include trans people, for example a trans- inclusive lesbian association or venue? The guidance appears to say that such an association should exclude trans women even where association members wish to include them. This appears to differ from the Supreme Court ruling itself, which does not require the exclusion of trans people from eg a lesbian association, only ruling that their exclusion would not be illegal. Does the Govt agree with the Chair of the EHRC that 'lobbying for these spaces' is a job now for trans people, as opposed to being the responsibility of govt to ensure equal rights for all? Who should fund the changes required by the ruling and/or guidance? How does this guidance fit with trans people's rights to freedom from degrading treatment, safety and privacy? I look forward to receiving your response to the above points so that I can provide clarity to my constituents who are currently unclear on how they can carry out their usual daily activities. Should it not be possible to answer these questions at the present time, I would suggest that the interim EHRC guidance should be withdrawn until it is possible for guidance to be issued which provides real clarity and has taken into account the experiences of all those who will be affected by it. Disappointing (but not surprising) to see the BBC parrot this nonsense without interrogating it.
Every restaurant, clothes shop, hospital etc is going to create separate facilities for and at the request of <1% of the population? Really?
This is just a way to exclude trans people from daily life.
