I'm a forest creature and so are you. We all depend on forests for the air we breathe, clean water, biodiversity, shelter and livable climate. Forest conservation + ecological management = critical climate action now. I live with a pack of Vizslas.
Come out and play!

In terms of climate, an order of magnitude more effective to focus on protecting existing native forests than tree planting.

Absolutely. In terms of nature-based solutions, the priorities are clear:

1. Protect what we already have.

2. Restore what has become degraded.

3. Regenerate what has been lost.

For immediate + meaningful #climate action, use #conservation easements to permanently protect secondary forests that are on the verge of merchantability and enforcably extend the age of the forest before sustainable harvest. This is key to HUGE removals in the next 20 yrs@pacificforest.bsky.social

As one small example, redwood forests store twice as much volume in their 2nd 40 years than their first, even as the rate of accrual declines because the denominator is going up. Math! #forests #climate #conservation

Further, as is typical the authors of the paper confuse RATE of carbon uptake with VOLUME. Yes, younger forests have a higher rate because they are starting with nothing + then progress to next to nothing. It's less well known, but well established scientifically, that older forests store MUCH MORE.

I'm all for protecting established younger forests but for real + additional emissions reductions it is critical to ensure these forests are both permanently protected and not cut again as soon as the trees are at a merchantable age. #conservation #forests @pacificforest.bsky.social 1/

Saw my first calypso orchids recently, too. Brings a smile to my face!
