Veterans Affairs staffers have found housing for more than 26,000 veterans at risk of homelessness through the first seven months of this year. Still, federal researchers estimate as many as 33,000 veterans around the country lack safe, stable housing on any given night. By Leo Shane, III

That puts the department on pace to top its goal of 38,000 veterans aided by the end of December.
