I'm interested in evolution and social behaviours and decided to test @stephenwolfram.bsky.social suggestion that the 3-state cellular automaton is a good arena for testing ideas about evolution. I give a quick description here:

The right way to sparsify transformers!

Two SAEs are positioned over two layers of a transformer, one transformer maps to the other using an MLP, this is approximated by a map between the SAEs going down one decoder, across along the MLP and then up the other encoder.

A photograph of the Pulteney Bridge; the Pulteney Bridge in Bath has shops build on so that it isn't obvious as you cross it that it is a bridge. The view of the bridge from one side is a classic postcard view of Bath. This photograph shows the other side of the bridge which is less elegant, there are ad hoc extensions to the shops cantilevered out at the side in a bit of jumble, it is less elegant but in some ways more interesting, more human.
