In a quiet conversation with a student who wanted to ask a question but couldn't figure out how to frame it, he came out to our table that he thinks he is anti-AI. This was not a space that he felt he could explore his concerns.

And, as they have learned to do, they stayed inside the boundaries setup by the adults. It was a place for student voice, but it was also crafted to ensure those student voices stayed within the boundaries.

In the closing aiEDU patted themselves on the back for having done such a great job letting students take the lead. Students were absolutely the bright spot. In general, students were very skeptical, very discerning, thinking critically.

They were told "yes, it can inhibit cognitive development, but still, definitely you should use it."

They were told to "train it on your voice".

They were told they don't need, or soon won't need to learn Trigonometry because Philosophy will be more important.

Students asked if it was OK that the models were now being trained on synthetic data and they were told "that's a huge challenge" but still, definitely, you should use it.

When students asked about bias inherent in LLM's They were told that apps built by teachers can counter the bias. That is NOT true.

They were told "you should understand it enough to not trust it".

The event started with a panel of experts. But none of them were technical and all of them were AI in Edu advocates.

Student questions about the environmental cost were brushed aside by comments like "yes, it uses a lot of electricity".

I completely disagree that we need to use the structures and tactics of the right. "The Master's tools will never Dismantle the Master's House." The left is so tied to Capitalist success that we can only be just left of craven.

The framework already exists that opposes the current obedience based education. Liberatory Education is rigorous, effective and has a very long history. White liberals keep fucking it all up by being just left of oppression. Freire, Betina Love, Ruha Benjamin, Zaretta Hammond, Lisa Delpit...
