I feel very strongly that as a former colony/condominium, Britain has a particular responsibility towards aiding the civilian population in Sudan, just as it does in Gaza

And on the point on conflation, I think it is hard if you identify strongly with your nationality to not feel some form of shame or contrition in some sense once you learn more of your nation's past.

Aye I think that's the bigger issue. It's not that every person in the street needs to personally apologise for their great great great grandfather's actions. It's more the British government still hands out MBEs.

There's also the aspect of the British state retaining a reflexive institutional pride in Empire/imperial institutions which further muddies the waters imo.

I've often found that the concept of "shame", particularly for white people, gets tied up in or equated with "acknowledgement" or "awareness" of the British Empire and its material impacts.
